Water
The North West is a summer rainfall region where evaporation exceeds rainfall in every month of the year. Dryland farming here is a wager on the season. We do not make that wager.
The farm draws from an operational surface dam and a line of deep boreholes into engineered storage, and delivers through a modern high-efficiency irrigation scheme designed for the intercropped layout. The scheme is designed by registered irrigation professionals and licensed for the volume it uses.
Energy
A hybrid solar installation with battery storage carries the irrigation controllers, the cold store, the sprouting chamber and the communications network through an outage. Grid supply is a supplement rather than a dependency. Standby generation covers what the batteries do not.
After the harvest
White maize is milled on site into super maize meal, samp, grits and bran. The plant is sized for our own production and for third-party toll milling for neighbouring producers.
Compound animal feed and a drought-season cattle lick are formulated on site. The mill takes our own grain and bought-in grain, which makes it a processing business in its own right rather than an outlet for the farm.
Segregated steel silos with aeration keep identity-preserved and conventional grain physically apart from intake to dispatch, with a separate flat bulk store for mill feedstock. Storage lets us sell when the market is right rather than when the combine is in the field.
A weighbridge on the property means every load is weighed before it leaves, in the presence of both parties, with a printed ticket. No cartage to a public weighbridge and no argument about mass lost in transit.
Looking ahead
A closed-loop aquaponics and fisheries operation is planned as a later phase, growing vegetables and gourmet microgreens on nutrient from the fish and returning every litre to the tanks.
